Historical Currency Auction Catalogs and Fixed Price Lists

Below is a list of over 115 historical (pre-2000) Currency Auction Catalogs and Fixed Price Lists issued between 1965 and 1994 by several currency dealers. Information shown for each catalog/price list includes Date, Highlights, Types of currency offered, and # of lots for auction catalogs. Each document's searchable pdf file can be viewed/downloaded by clicking on the corresponding Catalog Title link. A list of Prices Realized is included at the end of each auction catalog.
Catalogs/Price Lists issued by the following Currency Dealers are included in the list:
- Hickman & Waters: The John Hickman & John T. Waters partnership existed from 1965 until 1972. They pioneered the concept of collecting National Bank Notes by geographical location (ie 'Hometown Notes'), rather than by Treasury Signature combinations, which is how they had previously been collected. Between 1965 and 1972 they issued 35 fixed price currency lists. In 1972, Hickman & Waters disbanded, and the Hickman & Oakes partnership was formed.
- William P. Donlon: William P. Donlon was a coin & currency collector, researcher, dealer and author. His extensive personal and research currency collection was sold in his first mail bid auction in 1971. He held 12 mail bid auctions between 1971 and 1978. William P. Donlon was elected to the SPMC Hall of Fame in 2014.
- Hickman & Oakes: In 1972, Hickman & Waters disbanded, and Hickman & Oakes was formed. John Hickman and Dean Oakes issued their first currency list (#36) in 1972, carrying on the numbering of the lists that had been started by Hickman & Waters. They issued their fixed price currency lists until 1977 (with one last currency list (#60) in 1983). Between 1976 and 1989, Hickman & Oakes conducted a series of 38 mail bid auctions. Dean Oakes was elected to the SPMC Hall of Fame in 2021.
- John Hickman: Hickman Auctions, Inc. held 12 mail bid auctions between 1990 and 1994. John Hickman was elected to the SPMC Hall of Fame in 2014.
The Currency Types column lists the type(s) of currency offered in each catalog/price list. The following abbreviations are used:
- NBN (National Bank Notes), Obs (Obsoletes), LgType (Large Size Type), SmType (Small Size Type)
- Frac (Fractionals), Confed (Confederate), Col (Colonial & Continental), World (International Notes).
